How Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis Can Help

People come to therapy for many reasons, including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, feelings of emptiness or loneliness, trauma, loss, and significant life transitions.

They may be functioning well in many areas of life yet continue to experience emotional suffering, dissatisfaction in relationships, impostor syndrome, or find themselves repeating patterns they do not fully understand.

In some cases, individuals may have already tried shorter-term therapies or medication and experienced some relief, but sense that something deeper remains unresolved.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis offer an opportunity to explore these difficulties in greater depth, looking beyond symptoms and behaviors to understand the thoughts, feelings, experiences, relationships, and protective patterns that may be contributing to present-day suffering.

Through this process, we work toward a deeper understanding of ourselves and of patterns that may operate outside immediate awareness.

What Makes Psychoanalytic Therapy Different

Research consistently shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is central to effective treatment, with safety, trust, respect, and curiosity providing the foundation for meaningful work. Psychoanalytic therapy draws on a broad understanding of therapeutic approaches while tailoring treatment to each individual rather than applying a single technique or model.

Beyond managing symptoms or changing behaviors, the work focuses on understanding the meaning and origins of difficult thoughts, feelings, and patterns. The aim is to deepen self-awareness, encourage greater flexibility and self-compassion, and build on existing strengths.

What You Can Expect

Step 1

Schedule a brief consultation

We’ll start with a brief telephone consultation to discuss what is bringing you to therapy, answer your questions, and see whether I may be the right therapist for you.

Step 2

Meet and explore

Whenever possible, we’ll schedule an initial appointment in person. During our first several meetings, I’ll learn more about what you are experiencing, your history and relationships, and what you hope to understand or change.

Step 3

Find the right way of working together

These initial meetings also give you an opportunity to see whether you feel understood and comfortable with how we might work together.

Step 4

Deepen the work

There is no predetermined formula or manual for this type of therapy. As our work develops, we’ll explore the thoughts, feelings, experiences, and relationship patterns that emerge to better understand how these patterns shape your life today.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis explore how experiences, feelings, conflicts, and patterns (both conscious and outside our awareness) can shape our present lives. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy typically takes place once or twice a week, while psychoanalysis is more intensive, generally involving three or more sessions per week and allowing greater time and continuity for deeper exploration.

There is no need to decide which approach is right for you before we meet; together, we can determine the type and frequency of treatment that best fits your needs.
