FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Getting Started
-
You do not need to have a diagnosis or be in crisis to begin therapy. People often seek therapy because they are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationships, life transitions, or recurring patterns they want to understand more deeply.
-
The first few meetings are an opportunity for me to learn about what brings you to therapy, your history, relationships, and what you hope to understand or change. They also give you time to get a sense of me, how I work, and whether you feel comfortable continuing together.
-
No. You do not need to decide whether psychoanalytic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, or another frequency of treatment is appropriate before we meet. We can think about this together based on what brings you to therapy and your individual needs.
Therapy & Treatment
-
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy that explores not only current symptoms, but also the feelings, experiences, relationships, and patterns that may contribute to them. The aim is to develop greater self-awareness and a deeper understanding of patterns that may operate outside your immediate awareness.
-
Psychoanalysis works through regular, frequent sessions that create space to explore thoughts, feelings, memories, dreams, relationships, and patterns as they emerge. Rather than focusing only on symptom reduction, the work seeks to understand underlying emotional conflicts and how past experiences may continue to influence your present life.
-
Both approaches seek a deeper understanding of emotional difficulties and recurring patterns. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy typically takes place once or twice a week, while psychoanalysis is generally more intensive, with three or more sessions per week.
-
There is no predetermined timeline because psychotherapy is tailored to the individual. The length of treatment depends on what brings you to therapy, what you hope to understand or change, and how the work develops over time.
-
People seek psychoanalytic therapy for many reasons, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma, loss, loneliness, life transitions, and persistent feelings of dissatisfaction or emptiness. It can also be helpful when you find yourself repeating patterns despite understanding intellectually that you would like things to be different.
Fees & Insurance
-
I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance companies directly. Depending on your plan, you may be eligible for reimbursement for out-of-network mental health services, and I can provide the documentation needed to submit a claim.
-
Fees and the frequency of sessions are discussed during the consultation and initial meetings. If you plan to use out-of-network benefits, I also recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to understand your coverage, deductible, and reimbursement policies.
